Phonics at Our School

At Fairburn View Primary School school, we use the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised programme to teach phonics and early reading.
Phonics helps children learn to read and write by teaching them the sounds that letters make. Children learn how to:
- Recognise letter sounds
- Blend sounds together to read words
- Segment sounds to help with spelling
- Read with confidence and fluency
How We Teach Phonics
Children take part in daily phonics lessons from Nursery onwards. Lessons are engaging, practical and designed to build children’s confidence step by step.
We follow the Little Wandle progression carefully to ensure all children develop strong reading foundations.
Reading at School
Children read fully decodable books that match the sounds they have been taught in class. They read the same book several times to help build fluency, accuracy and understanding.
Supporting Reading at Home
You can support your child by:
- Reading with them every day
- Practising sounds and tricky words
- Listening to them read their school reading book
- Sharing and enjoying stories together
- visit the Little Wandle website for parents: https://www.littlewandle.org.uk/resources/for-parents/
Year 1 Phonics Screening Check
In Year 1, children complete the national Phonics Screening Check. This short assessment checks how well children can use their phonics skills to read words.
