Enrichment

We have some lovely enrichment activities planned for this year. We are always on the look out for new and exciting ways to support our curriculum.

During the course of the school year we will invite parents in to school to take part in a ‘school day’, we will have visitors within school (such as zoolab) to help us support the learning of the children. Last year the children enjoyed a trip to Williams Den as well as many other exciting opportunities.

Things to Remember

PE Kit

The children need to wear their PE kit to school on a Wednesday and a Thursday.

Homework

As we focus on early reading within school, homework within year one concentrates on improving your child’s reading skills. Your child will bring home a reading book which we expect them to read (and be signed for) three times before changing. You do not have to bring the diary back on the first two reads if you do not wish to. We will check that the planner has been signed three times before changing the book. During the first read, please concentrate on your child saying the sounds and reading the words. During the second read, please concentrate on expression and fluency of the sentences, and encourage your child to say the whole sentence after they have read it. During the third read, please ask your child comprehension questions to see if they have a good understanding of the text that they have read e.g who are the characters, how do you think they feel on this page, where do you think they are?

We will also send home high frequency words which your child needs to be able to recognise by sight. We will check these frequently at school, and when your child can say all of the words by sight, we will supply you with the next sheet. We thank you for your cooperation with this. It is extremely important that your child completes their homework at home in order for them to become the amazing readers that we strive for them to be!

School Dinners
If your child is having a school dinner, you can order them from the school grid app.

Reading at Fairburn View Primary School

Phonics: Your child will learn to read following the ‘Sounds Write’ Programme. This programme is designed to support the rigorous and systematic approach to teaching synthetic phonics.  Our caring teaching staff plan exciting lessons to meet the needs of all individual children.

Reading:

There is a huge focus on reading across school as we want all of our children to be amazing readers!

Inside school, children read to an adult three times a week during our guided reading sessions. Your child will read within a group and will read the same book three times. The first read concentrates on saying the sounds and reading the words, the second read concentrates on prosody and the third read is based on comprehension.

Parent Partnerships

We welcome any opportunities for parents to share their skills and knowledge.
Please listen to your child read at home every day and record this in your child’s planner. If you ever have any concerns about school or your child, the teachers are always available to speak at the end of the school day.

Thank you for your support.
