National curriculum in England: mathematics programmes of study

At Fairburn View Primary School, we believe that maths is an adventure for children (and adults) to be immersed in, get creative with, make mistakes, and conquer!  For these reasons, we have adopted the White Rose Maths Hub scheme of learning. The White Rose Maths Hub is a resource programme designed to enhance mathematics education in the UK. It offers high-quality teaching materials, assessments, and digital tools that are aligned with the curriculum, supporting teachers in delivering engaging lessons. The hub focuses on mastery learning principles, using a concrete-pictorial-abstract approach to help students build a strong foundation in mathematics. Additionally, it includes resources for intervention and professional development, fostering collaboration among educators to improve student outcomes.

We use White Rose Maths from EYFS through to Year 6. We follow their long-term plans and schemes of learning, adapting these to meet the needs of our children. Pupils study mathematics daily, covering a broad and balanced mathematical curriculum.

At Fairburn View, we endeavour to achieve these aims alongside our own school ethos and values.

“Through a safe, positive and empowering environment, we can be anything!”

Maths Morning Work

There are certain basic maths skills which act as building blocks for all future learning and must be secured.  The purpose of our morning work is to ensure that these skills are mastered to a sufficient standard at a specific time in a child’s learning journey.

The guidance document below makes explicit what skills should be mastered in each year group, which resources are appropriate to use and how class teachers can be confident that these skills have been mastered to an appropriate standard.

Fluency in numbers is key to accessing all areas of Mathematics confidently and securely.  Knowing number facts ‘off by heart’ frees up space in a child’s working memory when they complete more complex calculations and allows children to reason and problem solve with greater depth, which, alongside fluency, are the key elements of the Mathematics curriculum.
