There is no better classroom experience than witnessing the birth of a living thing right before your eyes! This half term we have been lucky enough to hatch 10 chicken eggs. We learnt about how an incubator works and we made sure it was on the correct temperature each day. As you can imagine, the anticipation grew closer and closer in nursery as we approached hatch day. When we heard chirping we were so excited to see them hatch. We watched the incubator patiently and witnessed the chicks arrive very wet and floppy. We let them rest and get dry.
Once they were rested we began feeding them and giving them water. When they got a little bigger we put them in a cage so they had more room. We discussed how they were changing each day and we gave them all names.
Our chicks were called Fluffy, Cupcake, Pepper, Flapper, Ronny, Gravy, Stanley, Boxy, Rosie and Emily.
The children enjoyed discussing the chicks and engaging in role play of the life cycle of a chicken:
Cooper- “The mother hen lays the eggs”.
Elijah- “They stay in their little eggs and then they hatch into little chicks. Then they are a fully grown chicken and they lay eggs”.
Lakeland- “Eggs hatch into cute little chicks”.
Iris- “They are in the incubator to keep nice and warm”.
Zara- “Their shells are really hard”.
Paddy- “Incubators and cages keep them safe”.
